The Joints

The Vertebral Column and its Movements

The Vertebral Column is a solid, structure and yet very flexible. Solid and secure because its bones are held together by an invasive ligament system and hundreds of overlapping muscles,Flexible because the bones are arranged in such a way as to allow extensive ranges of movement in every possible direction.

It can be made to Flex as shown by the figure #1,illustrating the round-back movement, to extend as shown by the figure #2 illustrating the high thoracic squeeze and to Flex-extend to the side as shown by figure #3,rotate left and right as shown by the figure #4 illustrating the pyramid cross-over. The Vertebral Column does much more than this as will be shown and explained when we get to the Oblique round-about movements.
